About Me

My photo
At the moment I am caring full time for a family member and when the time comes I will be selling up and living on a narrowboat.I enjoy reading, especially about those living on narrowboats and their daily lives. The tug Nb Resolute in the above picture is NOT mine but is owned by Dave Moore and is something I would aspire to own one day although I am going to look at many boats before I make a decision on the style and interior.Tugs are looking good at the moment but have yet to look around one. My interest in narrowboats started some 47 years ago. As a lad I cycled from Luton to bridge 111 on the G.U.by the Globe to fish and watch the Morton and Clayton boats go by,full of coal with a family on board and always wondered how they kept their balance on the planks that ran above the coal and why the the dogs didnt jump in the canal. That fascination has stayed with me so when I am able I will be there on my narrowboat joining in the great community of boat owners. Solved. Why I have an interest in Narrowboats

Many years ago I used to cycle over to Linslade to go fishing in the canal and I always thought this was the reason for my interest in narrowboats and the canals until I came across an old family photo album.

My father never had a car and we always went cycling on days out. We had a tandem with a fitted seat on the back for me with pedals connected so that I could help with the effort of getting up the hills.

After finding this old album I now remember being taken to Linslade and Marsworth to watch the boats going through the locks on days out and this must be the reason for my interest and hopefully living on a narrowboat.

The following three photographs are the only ones that my father took which show me as a lad by the canal enjoying the sights and sounds of the working narrowboats.

They were taken in June 1958 at Linslade.

Mother and me.

The wonders of a lock

Isn't it strange that those early experiences should be forgotten yet somehow stay with you until something happens to make you remember, like these three photo's I found.

Yes I had blond hair then but it's white now and disappearing with every passing year.

Cutting the glare and insulating a polycarbonate roof

As promised I would detail how to cure the problem of glare and noise from rain and aircraft on a polycarbonate roof. My friend lives on the direct flight path of an airport runway which is 1.5 miles away so sound insulation was as important as cutting the glare from the roof. We decided on this option after he was quoted thousands of pounds for a contractor to do the job.

After cutting the Celotex insulation to size it was stuck to the polycarbonate roof panels with No Nails

Then battens were screwed into the aluminium roof joists through the plastic capping over the insulation using these screws...

Chrome tape was used to make a thermal seal between the joints of the insulating panels and then the plaster boards were screwed to the battens.

Picture showing the first line of plaster board fixed into position. The battens are staggered due to the varying lengths of the plaster board.

Picture showing the last panel to be covered.

They can now watch the television without having to wear sun glasses and the sound turned up.

My two girl friends. Pictures to make you smile.

Being a carer prevents me from seeing friends but when I can I try and make the most of it. Yesterday I went to see a very good friend and helped him put up a new ceiling, more of that in another blog.
When we had finished his wife said,"Dave go and have a look in the front room", and there were his two girls in these bags watching the TV. I just had to grab my camera and thought I would share the pictures with you.

But of course those angelic smiles never last for ever.......

Thief !

I like to put food out for the birds and have a tray right outside my window so that I can watch them feeding.
Just lately the sultanas that I put out for the blackbirds have been disappearing at an alarming rate.

One day last week I was sitting reading the paper and a large shadow appeared at the window, it made me jump and the shadow disappeared so I thought I would capture it on camera and here it is... during the day,

and at night

Where Mrs fox lives I don't know but she has become a regular visitor in the garden.
Now some people would want to stop encouraging them but in my view they are just a part of natures balance and have as much right as we do in populating the urban environment. I admire their ability to survive despite human intervention,so if you don't want them around don't leave food about.I don't mind them so I will continue to feed the birds and enjoy the delights that nature provides.

Understanding politics and business,or in reality how it doesn't work.

I thought I would share this with you after reading it on Rose of Ardens excellent blog.

Understanding politics and business.
Understanding politics and business is getting harder. The demarcation between politics and big business is becoming more and more blurred. If you have got a spare £100,000 you can have the ear of the politicians in high office. What do you get for your £100,000 the politicians would have you believe - breakfast or dinner. They would also have you believe its all totally above board.

Here is a guide to understanding how it works, or in reality how it doesn't work!

Socialism: You have two cows and you chose to give one to your neighbour.

Communism: You have two cows and the state takes both and gives you some of your own milk.

Fascism: You have two cows then the state takes both and sells you some of your own milk.

Nazism: You have two cows. The state takes both of your cows and then shoots you.

Bureaucrat-ism: You have two cows. The state takes both, shoots one, milks the other, and then throws the milk away.

Capitalism: You have two cows. You sell one and buy a bull.Your herd multiplies, and the economy grows. You sell them buy a boat and retire on the income.

Venture Capitalism: You have two cows. You sell three of them to your publicly listed company, using letters of credit opened at the bank, then execute a debt/equity swap with an associated general offer so that you get all four cows back, with a tax exemption for five cows. The milk rights of the six cows are transferred via an intermediary to a Cayman Island Company secretly owned by the majority shareholder who sells the rights to all seven cows back to your listed company. The annual report says the company owns eight cows, with an option on one more. You sell one cow to buy a new president of the United States, leaving you with nine cows. No balance sheet provided with the release. The public then buys your bull.

Surrealism: You have two giraffes. The government requires you to take harmonica lessons.

American Corporation: You have two cows. You sell one, and force the other to produce the milk of four cows. Later, you hire a consultant to analyse why the cow has dropped dead.

French Corporation: You have two cows. You go on strike, organise a riot, and block the roads, because you want three cows.

Japanese Corporation: You have two cows. You redesign them so they are one-tenth the size of an ordinary cow and produce twenty times the milk. You then create a clever cow cartoon image called a Cowkimona and market it worldwide.

Italian Corporation: You have two cows, but you don’t know where they are. You decide to have lunch.

Swiss Corporation: You have 5000 cows. None of them belong to you. You charge the owners for storing them.

Chinese Corporation: You have two cows. You have 300 people milking them. You claim that you have full employment, and high bovine productivity. You arrest the newsman who reported the real situation.

Indian corporation: You have two cows. You worship them.

Spanish Corporation: You have two cows but owe Santander for 6. Nobody drinks milk. You have a siesta and read about the collapse of the Euro.

Greek Corporation: You lease two cows and pay somebody three times the going rate to milk them using borrowed money. You refinance the four cows to secure the services of Goldman Sachs. They sell the future milk production of the sixty cows and fund your lifestyle. You retire to anywhere that doesn't use the Euro.

British Corporation: You have two cows. Both are mad.

Iraqi Corporation: Everyone thinks you have lots of cows. You tell them that you have none. No-one believes you, so they bomb the crap out of you and invade your country. You still have no cows, but at least you are now a democracy.

Australian Corporation: You have two cows. Business seems pretty good. You close the office and go for a few beers to celebrate.

New Zealand Corporation: You have two cows. The one on the left looks very attractive.

Argentinian Corporation: You don't have any cows. But you claim sovereignty over the ones belonging to your neighbour.

Pond Removal Due to Water Shortage

Last September I decided to have a lawn where the pond is as we are on a water meter and the forecast was not good for a lot of rain, now true to form we have a drought in the southern half of the UK.
I felt sorry for all the frogs that were going to be lost but more of that later. There were no fish to worry about as the heron had eaten them all the year before.

This is the pond before removal.

As you can see it was a right mess and something needed to be done.

Now you can see the same view with the pond removed ready to be seeded before the small stones were picked up.

We have had very little rain over winter which has affected the germination of the grass seed. Spot the join.

I thought I had removed all of the small flower bulbs before seeding but missed a few.

I rather like them so there they will stay, here's a close up

And the frogs, they are happy as well in their new home.....

"OK wise guy where's it gone ? "

...my old photographic developing trays.

We Like this..

Ahhhh!!! that's better!
